In the Department of Emergency Management, Deputy Emergency Services Coordinators (DESCs) plan, develop, coordinate, and train stakeholder groups on a variety of emergency-related programs and projects. They ensure plan compliance with state and federal requirements, recommend emergency services policies and procedures, and staff the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on a rotating basis during an emergency activation.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about the field of emergency management and will possess many of the following:

  • Significant emergency management program experience, including experience in long/or largescale emergencies and/or disasters and developing and maintaining emergency plans
  • Experience working with stakeholders/partner agencies to develop, coordinate, and/or maintain emergency management-related plans and programs, including: Alert and Warning systems, Functional Response Plans and Annexes (i.e. Mass Care and Shelter, Evacuation, Multi-Hazard), Hazard Mitigation, Operational Readiness, and Resource Management
  • Emergency Management coursework
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with government agencies, community groups, and other stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to easily relate to audiences of all levels and adjust to a variety of situations
  • The ability to shift gears quickly, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Organizational and planning skills including attention to detail, follow-through, and flexibility
